Synopsis:
At an underground MMA club in central Oslo, we meet a group of young people, each struggling with personal challenges that constantly test their love for the sport. Fighter is set in Oslo, where in 2025, prejudices and limitations still exist when it comes to culture, religion,
sports, and the expectations of adulthood. FIGHTER follows Sara, who dreams of becoming a professional MMA athlete. She also dreams of Andrea. And even though their feelings are mutual, their relationship must remain a secret. Her father, whom she looks up to, expects Sara to one day take over the family-owned halal butcher shops and sees martial arts as nothing more than a hobby. The pressure from her father, Samal, and their cultural traditions grows. As Sara wins fights in the ring, she gradually loses her freedom at home. Her family arranges a marriage with Mansour, an acquaintance from the same cultural background, despite Sara dreaming of a different life. The marriage quickly becomes suffocating. Mansour controls her, and tensions escalate when her father discovers Sara’s feelings for Andrea. The situation culminates in violence and a desperate attempt to escape. In exile, she is forced to confront her roots and her family´s betrayal before she manages to flee back to Norway. The film explores multiple themes. It is about family love and loyalty, but it is also a journey into the unknown—one filled with desperation, sorrow, betrayal, and the hope of new beginnings.
